Classic Fic Rec Mondays

It's the late 1800s in the Wild West. A lonely man seeks companionship; a woman restricted by convention seeks a future. Add those together and what do you get?

Yes: 29 Chapters then an extra chapter from the author

I am going to be the one to first to admit, that I was hesitant to read a western. Westerns have never really appealed to me. Whether it is reading about American history, watching a movie, or even reading a one of those Harlequin romance novels, Westerns have always been a huge MAJOR turn off for me. However… my tune has changed once I have read this story about a “The Mail Order Bride”.

There were about fifty notices in the newspaper, all from men out west who wanted wives. They didn't usually say it flat out like that. They couched it in flowery language and braggadocio, but you could read the desperation and the loneliness between the lines. It seemed as if these men could give her the willies as easily as the local swains.
She folded the paper in two and sat it down on the table just as a line in one of the ads caught her eye. "The mountains have become familiar friends over the years; purple pillars of majesty, icy castles in the winter, and green havens in the summer. I would like to share them with someone who would appreciate them as I do."
She picked the paper back up, intrigued and read the full notice.
"I am E. A. Cullen and I am a rancher in Colorado. The high country is a mystical place where I have found balm for my weary soul. The mountains have become familiar friends over the years; purple pillars of majesty, icy castles in the winter, and green havens in the summer. I would like to share them with someone who could appreciate them as I do." There was contact information listed afterwards.

In “The Mail Order Bride”, Edward posts a notice for a bride in the Matrimonial News. Months pass and he doesn’t receive a response. Sometime in October, however, Edward receives a response from a Miss Isabella Swan from Occoquan, Virginia. She is everything that Edward wants in a bride. She has wit and curiosity but she is also well-read, resourceful, and can tend to a house and farm. After several letters, Edward asks her if she would be willing to commit a life with him.

April 15, 1887
Dear Mr. Cullen,
In a word: Yes.
Please send details soon.
Yours Truly,
Isabella Swan

April 22, 1887
My Dear Miss Swan,
You have no idea how joyful your letter made me.
I've enclosed your round trip ticket. I hope a month gives you enough time to prepare for the trip.
I will be counting the days.
With high hopes,
Edward Cullen

Bella travels from her home in Virginia out towards the Wild West to meet Edward. When she arrives in Denver, Bella anxiously looks around for a man who claims he may not be comely. What Bella didn’t expect was to find him so handsome.

She took a few steps to the right to clear the way for hurrying passengers behind her when she saw a rather intense looking man staring at her. He was tall and lean and wearing a Stetson. Wasn't that what a rancher would wear? He had brown hair and was clean shaven.
She could feel the blush blooming upon her cheek and she looked down. How would she know if that man was Edward? She could not approach him and ask. That would be too forward if he was not. Anyway, this man was certainly very handsome, handsome enough to know he was, so it was unlikely he was Edward. According to his letter, Edward didn't know if he was comely or not. She took a few steps further along the platform away from the staring man and looked for a porter so she could retrieve her trunk.
"Uh, excuse me, ma'am, but are you Miss Isabella Swan?" Her heart started slamming against her chest as she slowly turned around to find the man in the Stetson, the brim of which was now politely being clutched in his hands, looking intently down at her.
"Yes, I am," she said in a shaky voice, "Mr. Cullen?"
His smile spread across his face, twinkling in his eyes, "It's a pleasure to meet you, Miss Swan."

Edward arrives at the train depot and eagerly looks around for Bella. What Edward didn’t expect was to find Miss Bella beautiful and a pure vision.

Soon, he could hear the train along the tracks, its soft chugging growing louder and louder. He went out to the front of the depot and flagged down a carriage man and instructed him to wait. The train was coming to a stop just as he returned to the platform. He began to peer at the people slowly disembarking from the cars. He had to laugh at himself. His heart was beating like a schoolboy's.
Suddenly, he saw a vision climbing down the train car stairs. In particulars she fit the description that Bella had originally given him with the additional fact that she was beautiful. He noticed he was not the only man there who was staring. The platform business ground to a stop as the young woman stepped a few feet along the platform. He could not take his eyes off of her. She looked up and her wide brown eyes met his and he was sure that his heart stopped. Sounds stilled. A sunbeam engulfed her figure in angelic luminosity.
Evidently she realized she was staring and she quickly looked down, a delectable blush reddened her cheeks. She started walking away and that spurred him to move. He walked up behind her and cleared his throat and asked if she was Isabella Swan.
She was.
It was when he took her hand he realized it.
She was the woman he would marry.

Their courtship is short but they both know that they have found their future and both are eager to begin their lives together. Edward takes her to his home, Bear Valley Ranch, and introduces her to his life in the Wild West.

All I can say is that this is one classic that everyone must read! I love how well thought out and researched this story is. Loaded with historical facts about the life and times of living in the Wild West, you will be amazed how quickly this story will own you. The Edward in this story is sweet, protective, at times shy and hesitant, but has a confidence that is needed to help him succeed with his goals of making a life out on his own merits. The Bella in this story is smart, incredibly shy but is strong, and not afraid to pull her own weight and help out around the ranch.

Written from a third person, this story is simply amazing and so well-written. You will find yourself not wanting to stop reading and addicted for more. I am happy to say that there is a sequel. The sequel, “Bear Valley Ranch”, begins where “Mail Order Bride” ends and is just as addicting.

If you have not read them yet, you need to add “Mail Order Bride” and “Bear Valley Ranch” to you reading list today! You will not be disappointed!

Chapter 2 of  Sins of My Mother by yesmrcullen

I grabbed the keys and letter that led me here and exited the car, walking toward the front porch. I had no clue what to expect, and cursed my body for making me so anxious.

I knocked twice.

Nothing.

As I headed back toward the car an old, red truck pulled into the driveway. I stopped and watched a man get out and walk around to the back. He didn't seem to notice me at first. After he had gathered his fishing pole and tackle box, he turned around and stopped in his tracks. His face turned pale, as if he'd seen a ghost.

Chapter 12 of Time of Salt by Scarlettplay

EPOV
Why is she doing this?

She’s shutting down and I don’t know why.

We touched, we connected. And it was unearthly. I’ve never felt such an electric charge rush through me from a simple glance off of my skin by another person. But that wasn’t the only factor in sealing the deal. The way she looked straight into my soul; there was none of that bullcrap. She truly saw me and understood who I am. None of this ‘chosen one’ insanity. I was simply Edward, not running from God, not fleeing. I was still, and it was beautiful. I’ve never felt so at home in my skin and it was all because she slowed down enough to be with me.

Oh how I want to rip this door down by the hinges and force her to see what we have!

“Bella! Please, will you just talk to me?” I yell more forcefully.

I’m starting to panic a little. She’s been down there for over an hour and not a single sound. What’s she doing?

“I’m sorry if you’re scared but I don’t regret what we did. I don’t want you to either. Now open this door before I start breaking it down!” I threaten to no avail.

No movement. Nothing.

“What can I get you to drink? I have coke, wine, or, being a good Southern boy, a pitcher of sweet tea.”

I couldn’t help the giggle that escaped; he pronounced tea like tae, drawling it out. “Some tea would be great,” emphasizing the pronunciation of tea.

“Well, darlin’, you say tea, I say tae. Either way, it’s sure to quench your thirst.” He stopped to give me a lingering kiss, before pulling the pitcher from the refrigerator and filling two glasses. My knees melted, making me grateful for the wall I leaned up against. “Now, put down the beast; dinner is served.” I set Wicket down, laughing when he shot Jasper a condescending look. “Great, you’ve won over my cat. He was incorrigible before, he’ll be unbearable now.”

Washing my hands again, I joined him at the table, where he’d set the plates and glasses, before lighting a pair of candles. The wicks were fresh, indicating he’d never used them. I found comfort in it, a fluttering in my stomach that he’d meant everything he had said earlier about there being no one else.

“Are you trying to seduce me with romance and candles, Mr. Whitlock?” I asked, while he held my chair for me to sit down.

“Only if you wish to be seduced, Ms. Swan,” he murmured against my neck.

The Twigasm NICU

This week in the NICU is Scarlettplay's Time of Salt.

This story takes place in 2024.    The story begins and something has definitely happened to the world, as we know it.  Bella is trying to escape but the reader can't really tell what or who she is trying to get away from, and that is part of the intrigue.  Our hero is also trying to run, and as the story progresses you can't really determine who is saving whom between Bella and Edward.  The pace of the story is so refreshing, I find myself reading so quickly when Bella is running, I love the way I get so caught up in the journey.  Edward in this story is a bit of a surprise, but do not let his appearance fool you, you will fall in love with him and ache to touch him just as Bella does.  Edward, or Messiahward, seems to have an effect on people where they want to be around him.  Yet, we find that Bella is almost afraid to be touched and scorns herself for doing anything more than protecting Edward.  This plot is so very original and exciting.

Take a look at Chapter 1 where Bella finally turns to see who is running behind her:

I decide that running isn't working, nor is my erratic pattern.

My only choice is to scramble up the branches, take the high ground and shoot this motherfucker in the head!

The minute I'm grappling with branches and lugging myself up, I feel a firm grasp on my ankle, pulling me back down.

I kick my assailant in the face, hard and hear him quietly curse.

"Calm the fuck down! I need your help!" he hisses quietly at me.

Why is he whispering?

"They're after me," he adds, "and I can't take them all on by myself. Please, help me!"

I grab the gun in an instant, turn and aim right at his skinhead.

The greenest, most piercing eyes I've ever seen meet me and I smirk. Stupid fake contacts. What's with people? Does he really think that that eye color is going to give him a super secret identity? Good thinking Clark Kent—the glasses throw me every time. What a moron!

I give a loud, hearty sardonic laugh. He's mine now! I'm done running.

"It's you!" he gasps and lets go of my leg.

What the hell

I beg you to go and take a look at this FANTASTIC story and show some love from the NICU!!!!  Stick with it, and you will be reward some deliciously good stuff!

Can't Walk Away From Friday

Its time again for our can't walk away from fic rec...so sit back and check out this amazing story.

In 1918 Edward survives the Spanish Flu only to find his world forever altered. He goes on, playing piano in a speakeasy during Prohibition, struggling to find meaning in life. Meeting Dream Girl gives him hope. He gives her a new take on "life".

This weeks "Can't walk away" rec is a wonderful story I discovered  as a rec in a Facebook group. It's a period fic and that's what peaked my interest. Some of my all time favorite Fanfics are period fic. So I was excited to say the least to find this little gem. I'm thrilled to say this is a true can't walk away. Once I started reading this I couldn't put it down. I was up all night reading this.
Deb starts the story back in 1918 just before the Spanish flu outbreak in Chicago. We get a brief glimpse into Edwards life before his world is turned upside down. Edward is father make it through the epidemic, but sadly his mother does not. Before she dies she secures a promise from Dr Calisle Cullen to look after Edward and to make sure he lives.  Edwards and his father are devastated by the loss of Elizabeth Masen. His family has crumbled part so he leaves for college. His father not being able to cope with his grief turns into lonely, bitter, drunken man and they lose touch over the years.
After college Edward secures a job at a speakeasy playing the piano.Every night he dreams of a faceless brunette beauty he calls his "Dream Girl". He satisfied with his life and isn't looking for a woman to fill any holes, unless of course dream girl were show up. When one day she does. A beautiful brunette catches his eye. Could this be his "Dream Girl?" Her face is more beautiful then anything he could have ever imagined.
Each day I waited on the bench in the late afternoon. Each day Dream Girl walked by and each day I got up to follow her. On the second day she glanced back with a shy smile before turning into the residential street where I presumed she lived. On the third day she shook her head and giggled as she walked by. On the fourth day she actually waited for me to catch up when I got stuck behind a delivery truck which backed up and blocked the sidewalk. I watched as she climbed the stairs of the grand house she lived in. I watched, furious with myself, as she glanced at me and sighed before disappearing behind the ornate front door.

Bella Swan has come to Chicago to visit her Aunt and to escaped her life in New York City. Her parents have set up an arranged marriage and she wants nothing to do with it. Bella wants to travel and experience all life has to offer just like her Aunt. She's not interested in falling in love, but fate has something different in mine for her. One day while out for a stroll she meets the devastatingly handsome Edward Masen. The two have a strong undeniable connection and fall in love very fast.

"What's happening? What is this?" She whispered in awe.
She felt it too. I moved to take off her hat but she beat me to it, removing it slowly and placing it on the porch swing. She took one step to close the distance between us and put her hands on my chest, her eyes looking up to me. I saw wonder and trust …I slid my hand along her neck and swept out the mahogany waves hidden in her collar. Then my hands were on her back, on her neck, in her hair. I bent to put my lips to hers and she sighed into our kiss and finally the kaleidoscope of my dreams was real, the pink lips, the brown eyes, the mahogany hair, she was there with me. Our lips moved together, sweetly, teasing, wanting so much more, knowing this wasn't the time but that there was a lifetime for more.

Just when these two are about to run away and travel the world together tragedy strikes.

My mind catalogued the scene in a detached sort of way, unable, at first, to comprehend the emotional impact. Bella's blue coat was darkened by blood, so much blood! Could there possibly be any left in her body? The truck's front tire pinned her legs to the ground and I knew they must be crushed. Her cloche was gone, thrown off by the impact and her hair spilled darkly, dark over more blood, blood bright red against the white of the snow.

Suddenly after not seeing him for over a decade Dr Cullen appears. Edward believes he's there to help, but suddenly Dr Cullen scoops up Bellas lifeless body and runs away with her.

"Stop! I know you hear me. Wait, for the love of God, Dr. Cullen – WAIT!" My voice was hoarse now, raw, and the cold air burned my throat. None of that mattered.
The car door was opened from the inside and Dr Cullen slid into the seat without looking back. I screamed as the car shot forward. Why wouldn't he wait? I ran after it, knowing it would have to slow before turning into the street. The car did slow, but barely, and with a final burst I threw myself at the back of it, meaning to grab hold. He wasn't going without me. He hadn't even said which hospital.

Where is Dr Cullen taking Bella? After dreaming about her for many years is Edwards dream girl gone for good? This story is quite a rollcoaster of emoitions and thats why I had such a hard time putting it down even for a minute.

Read 1929 and send deb24601 a review.

Less known FIc Wednesday (on Thursday lol)

Hey everyone, sorry this is being posted today...but here is this weeks less known fic rec for you, brought to you by our amazing Rhonda!

Edward is the proprietor of Bran Castle in the heart of Romania. He carries a heavy burden which torments him. When Bella crosses paths with him will she be the one to help shoulder his grief, or will her presence only make it worse? M for lang/lemons.
 Yes: 18 chapters

This is a short read but very well written.  It pairs Bella and Edward together but gives a different spin on each of their histories.  Bella has lost her parents (I won’t give away how as it is part of the story) and goes on to research different castles.  She comes upon Bran Castle where the story starts and ends in a way that it leaves you wanting more.  You want to know how their relationship ends even though the writer ends the story with a happy ending.  The other Cullen’s are briefly mentioned but they are not a big part of what the writer has in mind.  It would have been nice to see a sequel continuing from the ending to what happens next.  I am the type of reader that always wants more but some readers may be happy with what the writer leaves us at.

Chapter 2 Reflections
“Sighing at the memory, I tugged at my hair in frustration at my very presence in the castle while the humans milled about downstairs. I needed to feed. Besides replacing the rope, as a secondary precaution I'd put the restriction upon myself to travel back into the mountains during these necessary weeks, removing myself from any chance of temptation. Knowing I had a week of uninhibited gorging coming, I always let my hunger build.”

If you are the type of fan that wants to read a fan fiction but not put too much time into it with the busy life one leads this is for you.
